The Huts is an eco-friendly bed and breakfast that’s all about slowing down and soaking in the beauty of nature. Situated on land that’s been in the family for over 25 years, The Huts offer sweeping vistas overlooking Shipwreck Bay, in the small settlement of Ahipara, Northland. With no Wi-Fi to distract you, the focus is on relaxation, whether that’s star-gazing, enjoying a good book, or simply chilling out.
The Huts have been a passion project for its owners Kelly and Adam Murphy, who moved from Whaingaroa/Raglan to create a more intentional lifestyle. Stemming from two questions they asked themselves: 1) What really makes us happy? and 2) What sort of world are we contributing to for our kids?, the couple has been transforming land once covered in gorse and pampas into a peaceful sanctuary since 2018. Family and friends have been integral to its creation, from designing the space to adding unique touches, such as eco-insulation, a gravity fed water and septic system as well as an outdoor bath, shower and fire pit. And each year, they plant more trees and refine the experience to make it even more special for guests. It’s all about creating a space that feels both simple and meaningful.
Each individual hut features natural materials where possible and comes with its own private deck. The furniture is locally made; the bedding and towels are organic. The bathrooms are made of black slate to emulate the reef that flows around the nearby points. Yoga mats are available for those wanting to stretch out, and the cozy, thoughtfully designed spaces encourage guests to unwind and reset.
To start the day, each hut comes equipped with a breakfast pantry. Local and organic produce such as bread, eggs, homemade granola, yoghurt, milk and orange juice are supplied, so guests can enjoy their morning meal at their own pace.
