It can be a risky business making promises via a title – unless of course, you are a chocolate bar producer (Crunchie bars = never soft, Flakes = never solid) but in the case of Lyttelton’s new Asian-inspired Super, the promise is well and truly followed through:
SUPER = super.
Housed in a stunning old building – in fact, the oldest standing building in Lyttelton – SUPER offers delicious food and drink with a focus on sustainability, flavour and fun. Owners Sahni Bennett and Joseph Quested opened the doors in February 2018 and diners from Christchurch and beyond have been flocking ever since.
SUPER’s fare is simple, well thought out and just plain tasty. Designed for sharing, the menu hosts a range of Asian-fusion style dishes perfect for devouring with a group of friends. The Sang Choi Bao – Chinese lettuce cups filled with your choice of sticky beef or lemon grass mushrooms – as well as wontons, tofu in kombu broth, a range of toothsome bao and many more morsels make for the ultimate crowd pleasers and work perfectly alongside an enticing drinks menu involving sake, Japanese plum wine, cocktails, beer and wine. Much like the food, SUPER’s fit out is cool, casual and stylish without trying too hard to be any of those things.
And when it comes to their footprint on the earth, SUPER is treading very lightly. Reusable straws, organic and house-made ingredients, compostable packaging and a menu that swings more to the veggie side of things (meaty items are marked with an “M” instead of the usual reversal) make SUPER a spot worth visiting for what is guaranteed to be, quite frankly, nothing short of a super time.
