Moon Under Water is a good old fashioned neighbourhood pub located in Somerfield. Huddled close to the Port Hills, yet only a stone’s throw away from the central city, the location attracts both Christchurch South locals and visitors alike. The popularity of this unpretentious watering hole is simple: it is so much more than just a place to grab a drink – it’s the beating heart of the community where everyone is looked after.

Owner-operator Matt Kamstra has over twenty years of experience working in pubs both here in Aotearoa and in Ireland, England and Scotland. Moon Under Water is the outcome of all that experience and a vision of creating a familiar pub that is at the centre of a community. It’s all about a cosy, warm atmosphere where anyone will feel comfortable, where people can come together and where conversations can be had without shouting through music.

During the winter months you’ll find blankets and hotties aplenty for those chilly days, and cosy candle lit tables in the evenings; and when the sun is shining, the sun umbrellas appear and the courtyard packs out with people and their four legged friends enjoying some quality brews and good times.

Talking about those quality brews, the pub boasts a huge range of beer poured from eighteen taps, so it’s easy to find either something new to sample, or a familiar go-to that keeps things easy. On top of tap beer, a variety of up to seventy different bottled beers occupy the shelves of the fridge behind the bar. Moon Under Water also creates a couple of its own brews, which can only be enjoyed within these walls. There’s plenty here for the gin enthusiasts too, with around seventy different gins to choose from.

The kitchen out back pumps out comforting pub food in the form of burgers and pizzas, and often introduces a touch of difference to its offerings in the form of wild game. There are plenty of options for various dietary needs as well.

Next time you find yourself on the South side of the city, or when in the mood for a new acquaintance, make Moon Under Water your destination. We’re pretty confident you’ll be going back.
