The Old Vicarage is exactly that, the former home of the Vicars from St Mary’s Church in Halswell. However in recent times the place has transformed into a bustling café, restaurant and bar, a picturesque and cosy place to pull up a pew and catch up with friends.

Built in the late 19th Century, The Old Vicarage is a striking and rather large villa (thanks to a recent extension) set in immaculate gardens that are coiffed to perfection. Geraniums, roses and fuchsias along with established trees line the perimeters of the property offering a natural privacy to the outdoor courtyard area.

The quaint home has plenty of personality; lots of nooks and crannies, a dining room adorned with coloured stained glass windows, artifacts from yesteryears and a dedicated library complete with floor to ceiling bookcases and a traditional fireplace. In fact, as soon as you step over the threshold (via the original front door) you’ll realise this house is oozing with charm, history and now, hospitality.

Open 7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, The Old Vicarage is a family friendly place serving up a roster of traditional European inspired dishes. Classics like Smashed Avo served with Grizzly sourdough feature for morning meals, and crowd-pleasers such as Beer Battered Fish and Chips for later in the day. In summer, they fire up the grill in the garden and will cook your steak to order while you relax on their ample verdana. The bar is open til late and can be easily cordoned off from the front of the house for private functions too.

Much like the Vicar who was responsible for nurturing and nourishing the congregation, The Old Vicarage is on hand to tend to the flock with their open door, homely vibes and tasty kai.
