Every small town needs a decent watering hole, and perched right on the waterfront is Akaroa’s answer for this, Tīni. In fact, it is the only bar and restaurant that can lay claim to being situated right on the water’s edge in this charming seaside village. Being a mere hour’s drive from Christchurch, you can finish work for the week and soon have a cocktail in hand, while taking in spectacular views and enjoying a moment’s peace from city life.

With a stunning backdrop to lean into, the decor at Tīni is understandably pared back and also cashes in on stunning Peninsula light streaming through the windows. The space itself is intimate with warm timber accents and coastal tones, giving a nod to Akaroa’s French heritage without things feeling kitschy or heavily themed.

On the drinkery front, gin-lovers will be right at home with gin tasting flights being one of the hero offerings at Tīni. It’s a chance to show off some of the best gins from around Aotearoa and will have you debating your favourite tasting notes with friends. If gin isn’t your cup of tea, there’s plenty of delicious cocktails, alongside an impressive wine, beer and spirits list to account for all preferences. And if you truly can’t decide, be guided by the expert bartenders who are at the ready with recommendations.

When it comes to kai, the food menu is intentionally curated and has been designed with the philosophy of “every bite is a nod to NZ’s best”. From Neopolitan-style pizzas to Kushiyaki (Japanese-style charcoal-grilled skewers) to seasonal sides, the best local produce is heroed in these dishes, and they all make excellent accompaniments to the drinks coming from the bar.

With its laid-back charm and a front-row seat to one of the most picturesque harbours in the country, Tīni is at the top of many must-visit lists. Add in world-class service, and a stellar drinks list and food menu, it’s not hard to see why.
