Christchurch Adventure Park

Christchurch’s innately unique adventure park is a tranquil escape for those seeking more than just thrills. Visitors need not be seasoned mountain bikers to experience the seemingly remote 358 hectare park just a 15-minute drive from the central city.

Amongst the towering pine forests and deep Cashmere valleys, stunning views and delicious café and bar offerings – as well as off-pedal activities – await. As well as some of the best mountain bike trails in the country, there is a walking track which guests can climb and receive a free chairlift ride back down; a jaw-droppingly stunning zipline tour, and weekly events including quiz nights and lads’ and ladies’ evenings.

Take the tour of the park’s four zip lines (ranging from 400m to 1.1km long) and soar high above the treetops on the longest and highest zipline in New Zealand. Reach speeds up to or over 100km as you fly down the wires, with incredible panoramic views to Lyttelton, Diamond Harbour, the city centre, Southern Alps and Lake Ellesmere.

From heights of 150m, soar above the bike trails and watch now-tiny riders snake through the forest and fire-cleared hillsides. When you’re done exploring (or even before you start) sit on the cafe’s large, elevated deck and enjoy an Underground coffee, Cassels and Sons Brewing Co beer and wines from Black Estate. While it can be hard to go past the large cones of fries or a Kookery Nook pie, the casual dining menu is extensive with everything (except the pies) made on-site – and a separate dinner menu from 5 pm.

Antipasto platters stand out from the menu (which also caters for gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian dietary needs): Piled with oat crackers, breads, olives, dips, cheeses, sundried tomatoes and more, the platter goes perfectly with a glass of rose in the afternoon or early evening. In the evening, the dinner menu again offers tasty, generous servings including fresh fish, lamb shanks and curries.

Conveniently overlooking the children’s area and pump track, the deck is perfect for parents to keep an eye on littlies – or, with its free unlimited Wi-Fi – a peaceful and scenic alternative to working or studying in a cafe. There are not many cafes or bars in any city which welcome dirt-and mud-covered customers, but the adventure park is laid back and welcoming, buzzing with locals and tourists alike – and you know it’s good if the locals keep coming back.
