Global Soap sits within an old corner store where Nile and Tasman Street meets in upper central Nelson. The exterior of the store is painted with pops of refreshing yellow, like a citrus sorbet, hinting at the promise of a palette of beautiful colours and subtle smells that wait inside. Stepping in, you’ll find it hard not to pick up each colourful square placed neatly along the shelves and bring them to your nose, and even harder to walk out without a paper bag of goodies to take home.

Established in the late nineties, Global Soap is a pioneer of luxurious, environmentally friendly bathroom products. These days, the business is owned and operated by ex-Auckland couple Dave Mitchell and Jody MacLeod, who jumped from corporate life to soap making some three years ago. Since then, Global Soap has seen a more contemporary rebrand and an addition of new products, such as conditioner bars and solid deodorants, yet the ethos has stayed the same: to create handcrafted, sustainably made products for everyday luxury.

All of the solid bar products sold here are made in the on-site kitchen by Dave and Jody themselves. New scents are formulated by a lot of research and experimentation before they end up in the hands of customers. The dedicated soap makers are also continuously looking for ways to reduce waste even further, with the goal of zero waste in mind. Dave and Jody are also always on the lookout for appropriate re-sellers and there’s already a great list of stockists on their website. If you’re after some wonderful bathroom products and a bit of guilt-free retail therapy, you’ve come to the right place.
