Drop In Surf and Supply is not just any old surf shop - it’s a community-driven hub for ocean lovers in Kaitaia. This owner-operated store has an ethos centred around the water - its health, its people and its sustainability. The relationship is symbiotic: in order to get what we desire out of the ocean, we need to care for it. Drop In Surf and Supply offers a range of new and used surfboards, surf gear and a selection of locally sourced products, all which aim to reflect its values of wellness and respect for the ocean.
The owners of Drop In Surf and Supply, Kelly and Adam Murphy, consider the shop’s creation to be a true labour of love. The outfit dates back to 1974 and was once a Ministry of Works building. The shop could never have come to life without the support of the community - neighbours, friends, countless helping hands and plenty of pizza to go around! With their landlords as their neighbours, the creators as their friends, it's no wonder that what started as a simple vision to create a local gathering space has evolved into something bigger than imagined, organically becoming a key part of the surfing culture in the area.
One of the standout features of Drop In Surf and Supply is its dedication to sustainability and supporting local businesses. The shop serves up Kokako Coffee, paired with locally sourced Bella Vacca milk, and is committed to sustainability by eliminating single-use cups and minimising waste. In addition to top-quality surfboards - many shaped in New Zealand - the store also offers its own merchandise featuring embroidered artwork on 100% organic cotton, designed to last and eventually compost.
At Drop in Surf and Supply, there is a strong focus on supporting wāhine and rangatahi in the ocean space and fostering a respectful surfing culture. The vision for Drop In Surf and Supply is simple yet powerful: to bring ocean people together, highlight the positive energy of the local surf community, and inspire thoughtful decision-making when it comes to how we interact with the sea - both in terms of how we can respect it and what we can do to leave the ocean in a better place.
