Hub Matakana is a unique space that blends a café, reading room, bookshop and event venue into one, offering a sanctuary where customers can unwind and nourish themselves in every sense. Founded in what was once simply an old, run-down shed, the café has evolved into a cosy haven, a hub for wellness, sustainability and community. Hub Matakana is situated in a tranquil setting: from the lush garden, to the well stocked bookshop and the spacious outdoors; it’s hard not to feel at peace.
The ethos of permaculture, Care for the Earth, Care for the People, Share the Surplus, is influential in every decision, from the organic, gluten-free menu to the commitment to a zero-waste approach. Customers are encouraged to bring their own cups or participate in the reusable borrowing system to avoid single-use takeaway cups.
Their menu is packed with organic, gluten-free treats, including the much-loved Decadent Cacao, made with organic coconut milk and ceremonial cacao, and their nourishing granola bowls. The book selection is equally indulgent, spanning topics like mindfulness, health and personal growth, while curated pantry staples, handmade ceramics and wellness products round out the carefully chosen retail section. Workshops, breathwork classes, and special events provide further opportunities for customers to engage in personal transformation.
Settle in to the café and reading room with its cosy living room vibe, featuring a sprawling rug, meditation cushions, a couple of arm chairs and a small table and chairs, or visit the plant filled courtyard with its plentiful comfortable (and more conventional) seating options. The garden behind the café is also much enjoyed by customers offering a variety of spots to catch up with a friend or enjoy a zen moment with a delicious drink and a good book.
Hub Matakana’s vision is to deepen its role as a community hub, expanding wellness offerings to include a purpose-built space for movement, meditation and retreats at a time.
