Pizza: there’s a reason why it’s the go-to comfort food for so many. Packed with flavours, easy to share, and absolutely drowning in cheese, few foods unite people like pizza.

Whether you are after a late night slice on the way home or the gourmet Italian experience, Wellington can deliver the goods so you’re never too far from a dreamy slice. Here is our list of where to score that ultimate slice of pizza.
unit 24, ground floor/13 Leeds Street, Te Aro, Wellington
One of the OG establishments of the famed Hannahs Laneway, Pizza Pomodoro serves another crucial function in Wellington: dishing up some of the city’s finest authentic Neapolitan pizza. The small, efficient store offers a range of rosse or Bianche (with or without tomato sauce) pizzas to take away. If you want a seat and a pint to go with your pizza, you’re more than welcome to park up at Golding’s Free Dive across the road.
141 Cuba Street, Te Aro, Wellington
Considered by many to be Wellington’s original pizzeria, Scopa is a fantastic family-friendly spot serving up some of the best pizzas in town. An eclectic line-up of pizzas, coupled with a range of Italian dishes, salads, and fried sides, makes for a menu that’s perfect for sharing. Don’t forget to finish off with Scopa’s world-famous-in-Wellington hot chocolate.
199 Cuba Street, Te Aro, Wellington
Amidst one of the most renowned menus in Wellington, Ombra’s famous pizzette (plate-sized pizzas) stand out as the picks of the bunch. The menu changes regularly, but you can always rest assured you’ll be greeted with an inventive mix of flavours, with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options.
1 Courtenay Place, Te Aro
Another Wellingtonian pizza institution, Pizzeria Napoli’s home on Courtenay Place makes it the perfect place for a hearty Italian meal before hitting the town. It’s a simple proposition here: classic, no-nonsense woodfired pizzas done right. The pizzas can be made with a gluten-free base, and the range of calzones and pastas means you won’t be leaving hungry.
La Bella Italia
10 Nevis street, Petone
La Bella Italia was once rated one of the best pizzerias in the world - there isn’t much more that needs to be said about the place. The pizzas here do a good job of living up to that reputation, and the trip to Petone is certainly worth it. The place also doubles as an Italian food store, so feel free to peruse the shelves of authentic products imported straight from Italy while you wait for your pizza.
Little Beer Quarter
6 Edward Street, Te Aro, Wellington
One of Wellington’s favourite hidden watering holes, Little Beer Quarter does more than serve great beers. Tucked away on Edward Street, it’s a popular place to unwind for Friday drinks (it gets busy!), complemented, of course, by a range of delicious home-style pizzas - there are some interesting toppings to be found here, along with vegan-friendly choices.
Mediterranean Foods Trattoria and Deli
42 Constable Street, Newtown
A must-visit if you’re stopping by Newtown, Mediterranean Foods offers mouthwatering pizzas and so much more. Browse the eclectic goods in the store before you settle down for a classic pizza and pasta, or grab a slice to go if you’re in a rush. For the truly adventurous, head along on a Monday night with some mates and tuck into a metre-long pizza.
