One of Ferrymead’s best-kept secrets, Evil Genius Bar & Eatery is a destination you need to get to know. Open from dawn ‘til way past dusk, this space seamlessly transforms. Starting as an a.m. coffee haunt, it then evolves into a leisurely lunch locale, before ending the day with casual dining. Meet your best wine-drinking-buddy here for a glass or two.

The daytime offerings vary from a cabinet filled with house-made salads, wraps and other savouries to freshly baked muffins and other sweet treats. Coffee is crafted with Lyttelton roaster Spook Haus beans (one of the only spots to taste this brew on this side of the hill) and a full Asian tapas menu available from lunch (think tasty, interesting, generous bite-sized plates that are easily shared amongst a group).

This owner-operated joint has recently gone through a face-lift, keeps things local and supports the small guys whenever possible. The majority of the wine served here is sourced through Mt Pleasant-based Long Cloud wines, the new menu has been created by Lyttelton based one-woman-band Ellabobella Design, and the aforementioned coffee beans make a very short journey here as well. And just about everything that comes out of the kitchen is created within these walls.

Mondays here see the kitchen being taken-over by Fu Manchu during Evil Genius’ No Menu Mondays. The first Saturday of the month turns the restaurant into a dancehall during its Eat-Drink-Dance events.

Tucked in next door is Evil Genius’ namesake co-working space where a number of creative cats work on different projects, either within their own businesses or through collaboration. After-work drinkers flood to the other side of the wall, creating a nice buzz - especially towards the end of the week.

Early risers sipping their morning cuppa at Evil Genius are treated with a stunning sunrise across the estuary, and late-nighters can take in the tranquil shimmer of lights on the hills across – and it’s a pretty ace view throughout the day too. Next time you’re heading from the city to the beach, make sure to pop in and say hello to these guys or book it in as your next foodie destination.
