Malvern House 159 Hereford St, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch

Breathing new life into the ground floor of Christchurch’s NZR Co Building, Rook is a sleek, hyper-modern cafe playing a pivotal role in the revival of this once-infamous Hereford Street landmark. Previously regarded as one of the city’s greatest post-quake eyesores, thanks to its façade ticking up the most tags, a thoughtful restoration project has put that reputation firmly in the past.

With Madison Avenue as its inspiration, the building has returned to its original cool, concrete aesthetic, and Rook couldn’t be a more fitting resident. Owned by James August, Sung Park and Kyle Cabangun, the cafe takes an "experiential and experimental” approach to coffee. The lustrous chrome-plated Modbar (one of the only under-counter coffee machine setups you’ll find in the South Island) is the first thing to catch the eye, complemented by clean grey tiles, exposed concrete and small, intentional pops of colour.

Ozone Coffee is Rook’s primary local supplier, but there’s a rotating list of international roasters on offer to keep things extra interesting. Expect the very best version of your go-to order, smooth filter coffees, and standout specialty drinks – most notably a dedicated cold foam menu that’s quickly become their signature. If you’ve been on Instagram recently, you’ll have spotted creations like the picture-perfect Mont Blanc: cold brew topped with a cloud-like layer of orange, vanilla and nutmeg-infused cold foam, finished with grated orange and chocolate garnish. A welcome bit of sparkle for an otherwise ordinary weekday morning.

While drinks take centre stage here, the cabinet hasn’t been left in the dust. There’s a tight selection of Grizzly donuts and pastries, Butter canelés, Akin cookies, and a daily rotation of deli-style sandwiches made fresh by James every morning (and swiftly snapped up by the inner-city crowd).

Open weekdays 7am–2pm, Rook is perfectly positioned for a pre-work pit stop or midday escape. Exceptional coffee (and a friendly, upbeat team) will set you up for your to-do list, while seating around the perimeter invites you to perch by the window and flip through the latest Apartamento. Hear that? That’s Christchurch’s cafe scene taking another bow.
