Sweat and tears are a given, but there was definitely no blood involved in the birth of Grater Goods vegan butchery & deli. Found in an old glass factory in Sydenham’s industrial blocks, fifth generation ‘butcher’ and long-term vegan Flip Grater runs the shop alongside her husband Youssef Iskrane. The tongue-in-cheek use of the term butchery within an entirely plant-based operation points out what you can expect to find here: everything from sausages to bacon and steak - just the more humane and sustainable kind.

What started as a hole-in-the-wall sandwich bar has grown into a full café furnished suitably with mismatched vintage tables and chairs and comfy couches. There’s a basket of toys for little ones to discover and Junk & Disorderly next door for the adult treasure hunter. Bottomless French press coffee is the chosen style of caffeine, or grab a cold thirst quencher by Karma Cola.

Making a change and working towards keeping this planet inhabitable for future generations is the core ethos of Grater Goods. The mission is to introduce more people to vegan products, and in no way exclude meat-eaters – if anything, to invite everyone to eat more sustainably. Digging into the exceptionally tasty vegan meats created here will have even the most stubborn carnivore question their principles.

On top of the extensive list of vegan meats, there’s a load of vegan cheeses to get to know– anything from crumbly, melt-in-your-mouth parmesan to fresh mozzarella and smokey cheddar. Top these up with pesto, mushroom pate or faux gras from the deli and your taste buds are in for a good time. Everything you can possibly need for a vegan antipasti platter is at your fingertips at this gourmet location.

Pop in at lunch and grab yourself a delish deli sandwich or point your nose here with a group of pals after work on a Friday and dig into loaded fries with vegan poutine, washed down oh-so-nicely with local beer or a glass of wine. Keep your eyes peeled on Grater Goods social for updates on all that’s on offer (we hear vegan ribs and salmon are in development) and to find out the news on a soon-to-open wine bar which will co-habit the space, opening its doors sometime in the near future.
