Tanoshi has made a name for itself in Queenstown with three popular sites, each with a slightly different focus. But its Christchurch restaurant is a fusion of them all. An authentic izakaya, Tanoshi can be found tucked on Shands Lane within the terrace precinct, just through the alleys behind the riverfront restaurants.

Polite, fine service and an authentic feel greet you as you enter this restaurant. Find a comfortable booth to settle in or go for a spot at one of the tall tables and watch the kitchen in action. During the warmer months, a sunny courtyard invites outdoor eating.

A lunch time favourite here is the build-your-own ramen, where you can choose a base, a broth, noodles, protein and toppings to your liking. Options galore include Tanoshi’s signature Tonkotsu broth, a rich creamy broth made with slow-cooked pork bones, and for vegetarians, the Kombu broth, which is made with seaweed, is a tasty variation. Proteins include the likes of pork belly, soy mince and crispy prawns, amongst others. On top of ramen, Tanoshi also whips up popular lunchtime bento boxes, donburi and salads.

The dinner time highlight at Tanoshi is Japanese tapas accompanied with a few drinks, as is the true izakaya style. These dishes are designed to be shared amongst a group, and that’s the fun part: order a variety of tapas to share and get to taste much more than what you would with just one dish for yourself. There is so much to choose from, there is bound to be a favourite for everyone.

Friendly and social, Tanoshi is a spot to head for a hearty lunch or an evening of good food and good times with friends and family.
