Southpaw Brewing Company & Taproom, found in Christchurch’s seaside suburb of New Brighton, is proudly community-focused and this small, independent brewery is part of the reinvigoration of New Brighton Mall. The Taproom aims to (and succeeds!) have something for everyone, whether you’re coming straight from the office or dusting off the sand from the beach, you’re welcome here.

Husband and wife duo, Cam Burgess and Penny Prescott, started Southpaw with a couple of friends after they were inspired by the beers they sampled whilst travelling through America. When they returned, Cam worked at several breweries honing his skills before Southpaw was born. Originally, the brewery space was in Hornby, but in 2025, they were able to fulfil a long-held dream to open the brewery and taproom in their own backyard of New Brighton.

If you’re walking down New Brighton Mall, the bright aqua blue facade of the taproom is hard to miss, and as soon as you enter the space, you’ll feel right at home. The vibes here are relaxed, dogs are always welcome, and whilst you sip on your brew of choice, you can watch the brewery at work.

Speaking of brews, the beers on tap and available at Southpaw are inspired both by Cam and Penny’s travels but also by the New Brighton community they are proud to live and work in. From their core range, which includes IPAs, APAs, lagers, pilsners and pale ales to special limited releases and a floral series for those that like something more adventurous, there’s truly a beer for every palate. The Taproom also serves wines by Lillies and Coes non-alcoholic range, and to accompany your beverages, they have a rotating range of West Coast Pies, Switch New Brighton Toasties, and Mushroom Jerky by Remarkable Fungi.

Southpaw Brewing Company & Taproom is the epitome of your neighbourhood watering hole, a place to gather with a group of mates after work or on the weekend. It’s a place for locals by locals, yet anyone visiting from further afield will always be welcomed with open arms, it’s the best of both worlds!
