371 St Asaph St, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch

In a converted industrial warehouse space on St Asaph Street, Space Academy has been keeping this part of town humming since it opened its doors in 2014. As a multi-use venue, bar, eatery and community space, there’s a lot going on here to leave you feeling full of inspiration, excitement, and really good pizza.

Open from Wednesday to Sunday, Space Academy hosts a lively and diverse events programme, with each week bringing something new and unique. The calendar is packed with live music gigs, featuring artists from Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa, and further afield. In between cheering on your favourite bands and being blown away by fresh talent, visitors have the opportunity to experience poetry slam nights, engage in local community initiatives, spark new ideas at talks and debates, and much more.

Owners Megan, Hamish and Richard have built a warm, inclusive, and welcoming place inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian interiors, never forgetting the village of friends and whānau who helped them prepare for opening day. Everywhere you look, there are natural touches and handmade materials that tell the history of Space Academy. One of the huge shelves was designed and installed as part of ‘Whole House Re-use’, a project by REkindle that repurposed material from a red-zoned home into beautiful and practical creations. Artist, builder and furniture maker Tim McGurk went on to build the venue’s stage as well as stools and high tables from similar rescued materials.

The team kept themselves busy during the Covid years, teaming up with Brendan from Alligator Pizza to introduce Pizza Trap to their offering and added a green courtyard out back, overrun by lush plants. The outdoor beer hall tables provide a laid-back spot to share delicious kai and drinks with your favourite people – and you’ll no doubt see little ones running around with a slice of pizza in each hand. At the bar, drinking local is encouraged, with plenty of wine and beer courtesy of North Canterbury producers. There’s a nice selection of non-alcoholic options too, including Tiny by Garage Project and the Karma Drinks range.

While it’s technically situated in the central city, Space Academy has the spirit of a neighbourhood bar with an unwavering focus on creativity, community, and environment. Oh, and if you’re in need of a haircut, make sure to visit Miki at her salon, Doki, located at the front of the building.
