If you've ever pictured yourself in a postcard-perfect scene: pastel buildings, treat in hand, old trams rolling by, then Zoyi Bakerhouse on New Regent Street is your ticket. Propped up outside Story restaurant, this specialty cinnamon scroll stall is a delicious addition to the colourful heritage quarter.

Owner Sukh Singh started making cinnamon scrolls to satisfy his wife Minnie's pregnancy cravings. As a chef and baker with time at Craggy Range and Napier's doughnut-famous Mister D, he was more than equipped to provide. Zoyi is named after their daughter, the name itself a nod to morning prayer. Fitting, given Sukh's up at 4am to prepare what fills their street-side cabinet fresh each day.

His signature scrolls are decadent, delightfully big, and rotate through inventive flavours, with vegan options often available. Alongside is a selection of indulgent doughnuts. The crème brûlée is a showstopper: Sukh pumps it with custard before torching the top on the spot. Then there are the canned iced matcha and layered cheesecake, among the first of their kind in the country. Pop the tab and enjoy.

Trading Friday to Sunday for now, Zoyi is an innovative addition to Christchurch city centre's ever-adapting food scene. With plans for a permanent space, it's a name you'll remember, and one you'll soon be hearing more of.
