Seeing HANRAD as ‘just another rug shop’ would be your first mistake; the second would be not going inside.

HANRAD is a creative space where founder Barry and his team work with their clients to create rugs that are truly unique to them. To some, rugs are just rugs, but at HANRAD each rug is bespoke, a work of art. The concept is simple: each client experiences an individual journey to arrive at the perfect rug, and whether it’s an art inspired design or one of HANRAD’s in-house designs, each rug can be customised to the ideal size, shape or colour.

Barry’s inspiration for design stems from his love of art and, in particular, contemporary art. Previously based in Beijing for 10 years, Barry worked on exciting interior design projects, sourcing inspirational design solutions.  During one art gallery visit, Barry spotted a piece that he thought would translate magnificently into a rug design, and from there, the idea for HANRAD Bespoke Rugs was born. Visiting from Beijing when the pandemic hit, Barry found himself stranded in New Zealand and with little option but to open that first gallery right here in Hamilton, his hometown.

Unsurprisingly, Barry’s passion and expertise lie in the creation of rug designs based on original artworks. Barry collaborates with the artists themselves to reinterpret their works into rug designs, capturing the essence of the original art. Other designs are inspired by Barry’s love for diversity, culture and life experiences.  In 2020, Barry successfully showcased a selection of HANRAD’s art-inspired rugs to the global interior design industry at the Maison & Objet Interior Design Fair in Paris 2020. The concept was well received and has paved the way for global success.

With an ethos of producing unique rugs made of the finest materials and to the highest standards achievable, HANRAD is stamping its mark in Hamilton and beyond. The Hamilton gallery also displays original artworks alongside the rugs, providing an opportunity to connect with the wider arts community. And with a healthy turnover of the displays, no two visits will ever be the same.
