Brave Brewing Co. is a small but mighty Hastings brewery, family owned and operated and known around Hawke’s Bay for producing some of the best craft beers in the region and, indeed, throughout the country.

Husband and wife dream team Matt (head brewer) and Gemma (marketing, social media and front-of-house whizz) began Brave in late 2014 out of their home garage. They first sold their beers at the Hastings Farmers Market, and as their reputation grew, they expanded to a small production facility. Things continued to gather pace, and in November 2020, they were one of the first businesses to open in the central Tribune Precinct.

The atmosphere in Brave Brewing Co. is welcoming and relaxed, and a courtyard and plenty of seating inside mean there’s space for everyone. With pops of their signature bright yellow everywhere, neon signage and large-scale artwork, the interior is fun and reflects the sunny personalities behind the scenes. You even get a sneak peek at the brewing facility behind large glass windows from the main taproom.

Brave’s ethos when it comes to brewing is to make quality, flavourful beer and to serve it to you fresh, so there really is no better place to enjoy a pint or two than at their brewery. Whether you go for something that’s on tap or in a bottle, there are no wrong choices, and the team here are experts in providing recommendations. If you try a beverage you like, then why not take some bottles home with you or go for the fill-a-flagon option. While Brave is all about the beer, they don’t discriminate and have a range of local wines, ciders, sodas and kombucha on offer too.

Beer is not the only thing that Brave Brewing does well, as their eatery is pretty phenomenal too. Make sure you check out the food menu and try some bites as well. Their hot dogs have quickly gained an A+ rating around town, with the burgers providing some stiff competition. There are also some banging small plates and side dishes to choose from, and if you have room after your main meal, their desserts do not disappoint.

All in all, this friendly neighbourhood brewery is a must-visit and will quickly become your new local favourite.
