Follow the enticing aroma of freshly roasted coffee down Queen Street East and through the doors of The Artisan Cafe, a boutique micro roastery adding a great buzz to the heart of Hastings.
The Artisan Cafe is located in a striking historic building, with a large street-facing window that floods the space with light – and conveniently allows the barista to pass out takeaway coffees for people on the go. Inside, cute pockets of small tables are perfect for a couple of friends catching up, one-on-one business meetings or a solo coffee date with a good book in hand.
If you couldn’t tell by the coffee sacks and humming roaster in the backroom, you’re in for a fantastic brew here. Since 2014, the team has been crafting their own house blend of Brazilian Cerrado and South American Honduras, resulting in a smooth and nutty flavour with chocolatey undertones. Enjoy a beautiful barista-made coffee (always served with a chocolate-coated coffee bean) or grab a bag of beans for your own home brewing. Harney & Sons’ artisan tea range is also available if coffee isn’t your thing or you’ve exceeded your daily quota.
A reliable selection of cabinet classics matches the quality of the coffee, whether you’re in need of a sweet pick-me-up or a wholesome lunch. Apart from soups ladled out in winter and salads on show during the warmer months, the food offering is consistent throughout the year – after all, why change a good thing? You’ve got nationwide favourites like ginger crunch, neenish tarts and melt-in-the-mouth Yo-Yos, alongside fresh gourmet sandwiches and toasties. Hot tip: the vibrant basil pesto, tomato and tomato toastie comes highly recommended.
It’s all very well to serve quality coffee and food, but it’s the warm smiles behind the counter that take The Artisan Cafe from a good cafe to a well-loved local gem.
