A vibrant splash of green on Petone’s Jackson Street, The Elephant Ear brings together houseplants and unhurried moments, served with a welcome dash of caffeine and homely baking.
The space leans wholeheartedly into lush, plant-filled surroundings. Large leaves spill from pots, shelves carry carefully chosen greenery, and the overall atmosphere is cosy and calm. It’s casual, genuinely welcoming, and of course dog-friendly – somewhere you can grab a takeaway bite on the run or pause for a while with a coffee in hand, surrounded by living green. The aim has always been to create a space that feels warm and grounding, and that intention is felt in every corner.
Coffee is taken seriously here, but so are the plants. This isn’t a cafe with a few token fronds, nor a plant shop that happens to pour espresso. Both elements are equally important and thoughtfully curated, from quality beans to a considered range of houseplants and plant-care essentials you’ll actually want to take home.
Then there’s the baking. Everything is made in-house, and the loaded cookies have developed a following of their own – generously sized, unapologetically indulgent, and often the reason people pop in. You can also get these at their sister site in Fairfield, Elph, just down the road. The toasties deliver the savoury counterpart: no-drama comfort food at a price that feels fair. It all adds up to a place built on small everyday pleasures, done exceptionally well.
The brainchild of husband-and-wife duo Simon and Kaysey, The Elephant Ear is named after the plant they kept seeing throughout their travels in Europe. It felt more like a sign, rather than a coincidence, and thus this little oasis in the heart of Petone came to be.
