Deville is quite possibly Nelson’s best-kept hospitality secret. Hidden away on New Street, you’re not likely to stumble upon this café by chance, but once you’ve discovered it, you’ll be sure to return. Deville’s expansive private garden fills up with locals and visitors whenever the sun is out, which in Nelson is nearly a daily occurrence. The interior features cosy low-lighting for an intimate feel, perfect on the rare cold day.

The family-run cafe draws inspiration for its fare from time spent working in restaurants in Texas. Dishes such as BBQ Brisket on Cornbread or Fried Buttermilk Chicken Burger give homage to the Southern State of the US. Deville’s menu changes with the seasons and the availability of fresh produce from the Nelson Market, so there will often be something new to sample. For drinks, expect local drops — craft beers and beautifully prepared Sublime coffee.

In recent years, Deville has expanded its live music offerings and during the warmer months (and Covid-restrictions allowing) the courtyard turns into a music venue twice a month. A wide range of bands, DJs, and performers entertain the lucky ones who get to join in on the fun. Check for upcoming gigs on the café’s website or social media.
