Quail Cafe

Tucked away in the lush Whangārei Quarry Gardens, Quail Cafe is a centrally located oasis where nature and hospitality intertwine. Overlooking the Waiarohia Stream as it winds through the gardens, this cosy cafe invites visitors to stop and smell the roses - and not just metaphorically. Whether you’re in the mood for a perfectly brewed Coffee Supreme flat white, a house-made pastry, or a leisurely brunch, Quail Cafe also offers a thoughtfully curated wine list supplied by Everyday Wine as well as a refined beer selection.  

Taking the plunge into cafe ownership wasn’t an easy decision. When Lily took over Quail Cafe in 2020, she was met with skepticism from those who doubted its potential. But she saw something special in the space, and in her words, she was “young, with a project in mind, and determined to create a warm, welcoming spot where anyone could enjoy great coffee, housemade food, and good company - whether catching up with friends or simply enjoying a peaceful moment alone.” Through dedication, resilience, and an unwavering belief in her vision, she has shaped Quail Cafe into a beloved local staple. The road hasn’t always been smooth; - natural disasters, unexpected setbacks, and personal challenges have all tested her resolve, but “seeing familiar faces return, building connections, and watching the cafe become busier and more loved over the years has been beyond rewarding”. 

The Quarry Gardens themselves are open to the public (by gold coin donation) and offer a range of accessible walking trails, picnic areas and water features. They are fully cared for by volunteers, and all proceeds go straight back into the gardens. They are a welcoming place, and that sense of belonging permeates the cafe, from the friendly team that remembers your usual order to the gentle hum of conversation that fills the air. It’s not just a place to eat and drink; it’s a sanctuary where the outside world slows down, even if just for a little while.

Beyond the cafe doors, Lily is deeply invested in Whangārei’s hospitality scene. She sees it as a collaborative effort, where success is shared and support is mutual. From working with other local business owners to fostering a spirit of camaraderie among hospitality professionals, she believes that the strength of the industry lies in its people.
