When you enter, you’ll be greeted by a carefully curated selection of coffee brewing equipment for casual coffee enthusiasts, budding home brewers, on the go folks and outright baristas. We’re talking reusable cups right through to stunning silver drip kettles, Chemexes and glass cold brew setups. They’ve even got a compact, unbreakable espresso kit for trampers and bikers.

Just past the retail section is the espresso bar where the team whips up handcrafted coffees for a steady stream of locals and visitors alike. They keep things classic with top notch flat whites, lattes, cappuccinos, mochaccino, ristretto, espresso, long blacks and iced lattes, and even have hot chocolates and fluffies for the little ones.

You’ll find the menu board to the right, which details what beans are currently being roasted and used. At any one time, the team will be working with an array of single origin beans from places such as Papua New Guinea, Colombia, Kenya, Mexico and beyond, as well as a thoughtful selection of blends. The friendly staff can tell you more about the beans themselves and help you find what you like.

Beyond the espresso bar is the roastery operation, at the heart of which you’ll notice a pop of vibrant green - a coffee plant. Not often seen in New Zealand, this tropical tree bears the special cherries. Surrounding this coffee centerpiece are the coffee roasting machines and the experts who know how to use them. Watch them at work and, if you’re feeling extra inspired, ask about the barista training school. Sign up for a class and change your coffee game forever!

If you don’t have time to visit the roastery, you can try these award winning beans at many of the region’s best cafés like fellow Neat Place: Ginger Bird. In everything they do, Ebony Coffee sticks to a sustainable model. They’ve got a convenient ordering app which you can download and they also use reusable tins to deliver beans to all of their local cafés. What’s not to love?
