Born out of owner Veronica James’ personal story, Munch in Palmerston North is a truly inclusive café where everyone is welcome, with an extensive and considered menu that caters to every dietary requirement.

With its wide open spaces and high ceilings, walking into Munch feels like a real breath of fresh air. Yet despite the abundance of wall space, there’s barely an empty surface wherever you look - retro artwork, old record covers, and mirrors have been methodically hung on the walls, with many of these curios donated by locals or fished from op shops by James herself. The counter is made of upcycled wood from Massey University’s science labs, further adding an unmistakably ‘Palmy’ feel to the space.

James’ lived experience with coeliac disease and a nut allergy is the driving force behind Munch, and the carefully curated menu and cabinet items are a testament to her mission. Every bite at Munch is 100% gluten-free, nut-free, and coeliac-safe by default, and there are plenty of keto, soy-free, dairy-free, low fodmap, and vegan and vegetarian options as well. Everything you see at Munch revolves around the mantra that no one should feel daunted by the prospect of eating out.

With its inclusive and welcoming approach to dining out, it’s no surprise that Munch is such a beloved and well-frequented establishment, attracting diners of all dietary leanings.
