The kind of rural gem that earns loyal detours, The Duke’s Roadhouse has quietly built a reputation for food worth planning your day around.
Owners Laura and Rob have poured years of travel, hospitality experience, and hard-earned know-how into creating something that feels distinctly their own. The fitout leans into what the pair calls ‘country bohemia’: an inviting, open space that feels at home in the Rangitīkei landscape while delivering the polish and quality you’d expect from an urban cafe. Shared music drifts through the space (carefully chosen, never an afterthought), tables fill with road-trippers and regulars, and there’s an unmistakable sense that staff genuinely enjoy being here - which, naturally, rubs off on everyone else.
The menu is packed with house-made detail. Pie fillings, relishes, spice mixes, hot sauces, and slow-cooked meats are all crafted onsite, resulting in flavours you’re unlikely to encounter elsewhere. Their signature dishes have developed dedicated followings, none more so than the grilled cheese scone: buttery, lightly crisped, and served with house-made jams. The Duke’s pancakes arrive stacked with preserved fruit, lightly spiced berries, mascarpone, maple syrup, and bacon, while the Reuben sandwich - layered with manuka-smoked brisket, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing on rye sourdough - makes a convincing case for lingering longer.
There’s substance behind the scenes, too. Food scraps are composted, local pigs are fed, vegetables are grown where possible, and local artisan products line the shelves. It all adds up to a roadside stop that feels deeply considered: generous in spirit, proudly local and unmistakably Duke’s.
