An ode to the year which marked the first time pasta appears to have been mentioned in text, 1154 celebrates that staple Italian dish that the whole world has learnt to appreciate. Running on the premise that pasta is already so good, there’s no need to dress it up with outrageous ingredients, 1154 make the staples here, and they make them damn good – think carbonara, bolognese and tortelloni with sides of greens, olives or the already infamous garlic and rosemary rolls. Gluten free, vegetarian and vegan eaters you too can rejoice, this place ensures you feel just as welcome with their easy-peasy dietary menu that makes putting together a meal a walk in the park.

Realising there was many a pasta lover out there who they didn’t want to let down, the team ensures they buy from only the best in the business when it comes to ingredients. Flour comes from a farm in Canterbury, tomatoes arrive over from Italy, and the all- natural or organic wine list has been handpicked from some of the smallest vineyards in the country. Fancy a beer with your pasta instead? Locals Parrotdog have all their crowd favourites on the menu here too. Anyone still stuck in the 90’s who thinks straws are still cool will be well out of luck here, as 1154 makes their own house sodas sans the niggly plastic tubes, and all takeaways come in Innocent Packaging’s handy containers.

If you’re not hooked already, then the fact that the kitchen team is in everyday early hand-making your pasta should convince those who thought their spaghetti days were over. Set out in a way that encourages community and interaction with strangers, take a seat at the big wooden communal table for that beautiful moment that is dining amongst strangers. Otherwise the high bench seating surrounded by mint tiles looking out to Cuba Street offer some of the best people watching around.

Running low on time to make dinner for your date? Wow them with some Italian inspired cooking thanks to the 1154 take home pasta bag, or if you like your takeouts cooked and ready to go, then you can order for pick-up or home delivery via their website.
