A coffee shop and art gallery rolled into one, Black Coffee has forged a reputation as one of the hippest spots in Newtown. Equally comfortable serving as a cultural hub as it is a great cafe, it’s where you’ll rub shoulders with a diverse cross-section of Wellingtonians - students, artists, musicians, hipsters, and everyone in between.

The decor is suitably ‘Newtown grunge’ - think slick noir, art adorning the walls, and best of all, there’s an old school pinball machine. The playlists are eclectic and ever-changing. For those with an artistic bent, Black Coffee is also committed to showcasing new and upcoming talent, both local and from further afield. Make sure you take the time to peruse the works on show, and keep an eye out for the next art opening hosted in-store.

The service is friendly and relaxed, and easygoing vibes permeate the air. After you’re done soaking in the art, it’s easy to tuck into a famed toastie, a vegan delight, or a bit of house-made chai in the secret courtyard. But perhaps most important of all, the coffee is superb, and the black coffee comes very strong indeed - make sure you ask for Raven, Black Coffee’s very own blend.

A cozy corner that is crammed full with delicious treats, excellent brews, and plenty of character, Black Coffee dares to be different, and does it with great gusto.
