60 Dixon St, Te Aro, Wellington

Who knew that making a difference to the community could taste so good? At Everybody Eats on Wellington’s Dixon Street, the heart of hospitality beats loud and clear. This is a restaurant where generosity isn’t a mere side dish; it’s served as a wholesome three-course meal.

Arranged in an inviting communal layout, the dining room glows with an inclusive energy: volunteers and guests, students and families, long-time locals and first-timers all coming together over beautifully plated, restaurant-quality kai. Warm wood tones and a hum of conversation set the stage for something more than just dinner.

The three-course set menu changes daily and is built entirely around rescued food, ingredients donated or saved from waste, then transformed into something extraordinary. It’s a dash of mystery box magic stirred in with lots of culinary talent, led by Head Chef Alicia and her lateral cooking approach. The clever team are experts at crafting versatile base dishes that are adaptable to the ingredients at hand, whether that’s a fragrant curry made from surplus veg or a silky dessert born from a sudden glut of cream.

The koha model (pay what you can, if you can) removes the barriers that often come with dining out, and the result is a deeply human experience. Everyone’s equal. Conversations flow as one. Tables are cleared not just of plates, but of division. Here, everybody truly gets to eat.
