As far as hidden gems go, Supra is about as hidden as they get. An unassuming, jet-black entrance tucked away on Wellington's Eva Street is one of the only glimpses you’ll get of this restaurant from the outside world and, as owner Thom Millott puts it, “it feels like you've stumbled across something that shouldn't be there”.

But stumble across it you will, and you’ll be glad you did. It’s an incredibly compact space, yet it doesn’t feel squished, with the layout adding to the air of intimacy. Most seats are perched at the wraparound bench that hugs the main perimeter of the restaurant, with the expansive windows inviting you to a spot of people-watching with your dinner date. Wooden and navy blue surfaces dominate the interior and elevate the atmosphere, though Thom will remind you that Supra is all about fun dining, rather than fine dining.

Boasting a sumptuous menu packed with intrigue, the food and beverage options are thoughtful, but not hard-headed. The claypot octopus rice is Supra’s signature dish, imagine a Spanish-style paella with a crunchy bottom, baked in a Chinese claypot. Japanese influences abound too, in the form of braised kombu and octopus dashi, and the focaccia baked in-house every day, is a staple with any meal.

Perhaps one of the most striking small restaurants in Wellington, Supra proves that good things do come in small, inconspicuous packages. Here, the cosiness of the space isn’t just a feature taken advantage of; it’s a proud testament to the transparency in everything they do.
