Who said plant-based had to be boring? At The Botanist, the dishes are anything but run of the mill. Coupled with flawless views of the beach, along with a versatile menu that will see you transition seamlessly from brunch to cocktails, it’s no wonder this gem is known as one of Wellington’s vegetarian hotspots.

Inside, the fitout leans into that easy, at-home feeling - with a striking palette that brings a dash of colourful chaos. Tables are dotted with small plants, shelves and corners spill over with greenery, and the whole space carries a soft, leafy calm that never tips into fussiness. Yet it all feels familiar and relaxed, like a second dining room you didn’t know you had. The cafe’s name might hint at botany, but it’s less about science and more about a genuine love for plant-based culinary art, expressed in an unpretentious, seaside sort of way.

The menu is where things really come into their own. This is a place where you can start with a proper coffee, linger over a full plant-based brunch, and then pivot to something from the cocktail list without missing a beat. The Bot Bennie is a standout: a hearty stack of spinach, potato rosti, and mushrooms, topped either the classic way with eggs or with their signature plant-based version - crispy tofu finished with a rich, golden ‘yolk’ sauce. The Veganize Me is another crowd favourite, a full English reworked into a satisfying vegan spread that doesn’t feel like a compromise. Then there’s the showstopper Banana Blossom Curry, fragrant and warming, with a coconut-laced green curry broth that leans aromatic rather than heavy.

Like the roaring Lyall Bay waves that unite the local community, The Botanist has a knack for seamlessly bringing everything together - coffee, cocktails, and genuinely thoughtful, plant-based food - into one cohesive, welcoming experience. It’s easy to come for one thing and end up staying for three.
