When Cat McKay’s and Fiona Gibb’s respective children went off to school and they were juggling working along with their young families, they decided to scheme up the ‘dream job’ together. After plenty of hard work and time spent building their business, they were eventually ready to give up their previous jobs and focus solely on Natty. Busy mothers as well as creatives mean Natty doesn’t follow all the usual 9 – 5pm rules, and instead you’ll find it open on Fridays and Saturdays, or throughout the week when one or both women are in the store working on soon to be finished pieces.

Part studio, part shop, this sweet space in the middle of Beramphore has come a long way from its previous life as a butchery. Although the meat fridge is still in situ (and makes for a perfect storage) the rest of the place has seen a thorough makeover. And if you’re wanting transparency in your shopping experience, Natty is the store for you. Stationery items, screen printed textiles, illustrated greeting cards and an ever-popular jewellery line now fill the warm interior, where the two owner/creators make their latest goods right under the gaze of curious customers. With a focus on Kiwiana without being too kitsch, there’s a real authenticity in seeing the hand-crafted pieces make their way from work bench to window display in the space of one small shop.

With over 100 shops around the country stocking Natty goods, it’s easy to see how these two creative woman are kept busy. Surprised shoppers are also happy to see that the Natty headquarters are actually in their own Wellington neighbourhood, proving testament to the fact that the owners have let growth happen organically.

Visit Natty to get a taste of what a studio looks like in action, and if you fancy tallying a while, or need a rest from deciding between all the beautiful things, there’s a comfy couch to kick back on too.
