Allpress Browns Mill in Freemans Bay is part working roastery, part cafe, part gallery space – and still one of Auckland’s most reliable places for a very good coffee. Tucked just off Drake Street, this is where the Allpress story began, and there’s something about the whole setup that feels both polished and charmingly humble.

The space itself does a lot without making a fuss about it. Natural light, timber finishes and a calm, open layout give it a relaxed feel, whether you’re grabbing a takeaway brew on the go or settling in for a slower start to the day. Beyond the cafe, there’s also the Allpress Studio, which hosts rotating exhibitions from local and international artists and ceramicists, plus a bunch of regular events that make the place feel properly woven into the neighbourhood.

Coffee is, unsurprisingly, the main event. The approach here is all about balance, clarity and consistency, with a focus on making each cup just as good on a regular Tuesday as it is when every variable happens to line up perfectly. Expect the signature espresso blend on the machine, plus rotating single-origin filters and other small-batch offerings for those keen to branch out a little.

The food offering keeps things simple. Fresh pastries arrive daily, the kitchen turns out sandwiches and light lunches, and their breakfast plates are a staple. Add a sunny terrace, a steady stream of regulars and the hum of a working roastery in the background, and you’ve got the sort of spot people build into their daily routine for good reason.
