Set back from the pace of Ponsonby Road, Everyday Needs offers a slower kind of retail experience. There’s a sense of calm as soon as you step inside, often accompanied by the scent of a carefully selected incense burning quietly in the corner.
Operating in Ponsonby for over a decade, this store has quietly built a loyal following over the years, particularly as a go-to for thoughtful, high-quality gifts. Look around and find shelves lined with all sorts of curious homewares, ceramics, textiles and tools – all designed to make every day a little more delightful.
Objects are chosen for how they function in real life, not just how they look (though they are all undeniably beautiful); with an emphasis on usefulness, longevity and considered design. The space itself reflects that thinking, too. Taking your time is highly encouraged: slowly wander and notice the details.
There’s a clear appreciation for Japanese design philosophy, evidenced by the restraint and attention to material across the store. That influence sits alongside a wider, globally sourced range, including European goods, South African textiles and Aotearoa makers. While larger pieces anchor the store, it’s the smaller items that work their way into people’s homes most often. Incense, wool slippers, socks, stationery, candles – the kinds of objects and tools we tend not to pay too much attention to, but have the power to quietly reduce friction in our everyday routines. The popular Arnold Circus Stool remains a standout, both as a functional piece and a long-standing part of the store’s story (fun fact: the founder worked closely with Martino Gamper to refine the original design, and Everyday Needs was the original retailer).
This lovely little oasis isn’t about following trends or filling space for the sake of it. It’s all about choosing well, living with less and finding joy in the objects we use daily.
