Tucked away on the corner of Normans and Strowan Road, Woods Cafe is a warm and inviting neighbourhood spot serving first-class coffee using Allpress Espresso and delicious, homemade food. And yes likely one of the best cheese scones of your life.

Local hospo legend Heidi Macfarlane opened Woods in the winter of 2024, marking her tenth beloved venture in Ōtautahi’s food scene (past favourites include Cocoa Black, Truffle Café and Meshino). Filling a much-needed gap in the Strowan suburbs, Woods has quickly become a go-to for locals, whether for a relaxed catch-up or a takeaway brew on the way to work. The small, experienced team has already earned a reputation for fast yet friendly service with lots of heart.

Everything you see in the cabinet and on the small breakfast and lunch menu is made in-house, except the bread which is sourced from Grizzly Baked Goods and used for fresh sammies and to accompany free-range eggs, creamy mushrooms, and winter soups. Aside from the sell-out scones, the cabinet is generously stocked with classic bikkies and slices (think Belgium Slice and Anzac cookies), toasties, club sandwiches, frittatas and more. The offering is simple but executed perfectly with something for everyone.

Woods is laid-back and inviting with a contemporary fit-out full of character and style. It’s the kind of cafe that every neighbourhood hopes for, so if this gem is in your neck of the woods, consider yourself blessed.
