New to Korean food? Come and say An Nyeong Ha Se Yo - or ‘hello’ - to this small but mighty outfit that’s quickly built a reputation for pumping out seriously good Korean meals.
Perched on Upper Hutt’s Main Street, An Nyeong Ha Se Yo’s bright yellow signage - and a giant caricature plastered on the front window - ensure it grabs the attention of passersby. Predominantly a takeaway joint, it’s a compact space, although there is a selection of tables for those who just can’t wait to dig into their meal. Few decorations adorn the walls save for the menu complete with photos, and the message is clear: this place is all about the food, with minimal distractions.
The small size of the space belies the sheer range of the menu, which traverses traditional Korean snacks and small bites to full meals and yes, of course, Korean fried chicken. Korean food connoisseurs will spot all the classic favourites here, from bulgogi and kimchi stew to tteokbokki and more. The gimbap here has a cult following, as does the king pork cutlet - basically a ridiculously oversized donkatsu served on rice. A range of convenient mix-and-match combo options means you can try a bit of everything if you don’t know where to start.
As with most Asian countries, street food and snacks play a big role in Korean cuisine, and An Nyeong Ha Se Yo is a great introduction to the diversity of flavours from this part of the world. From on-the-go snacks to full-blown dinner deals, there’s plenty to sink your teeth into.
