World-famous in Wellington for pumping out some of the best plant-based bites in the city, Belén Plant Bakery has now claimed its own stretch of Petone’s Jackson Street, bringing its unique blend of great food and inclusivity to the good people of Lower Hutt.
The Petone shop is Belén’s biggest space, yet it retains the effortlessly laid-back vibe its city branches are known for. Inside, it’s warm and pared back, filled with natural light, bursts of greenery, and Belén’s signature pastel tones. It manages to feel calm but alive at the same time - a little busy, a little slow, always cosy. You’ll spot laptops open, friends deep in conversation, and the steady rhythm of locals coming and going.
With Belén’s main kitchen based here, the heart of the bakery is on full display: trays moving in and out, donuts being glazed, pastries finished fresh throughout the day. A massive cabinet sits proudly as the centrepiece, with rows of delectable options presenting a delicious dilemma. Compared to the more grab-and-go energy of the CBD spots, this one invites you to stay.
As expected, everything here is 100% plant-based, though you’d never guess it. The menu changes constantly, keeping things interesting while holding onto core favourites. Donuts are the undoubted stars of the show - fluffy and often extravagant, with new flavours rolling through monthly. The ham and cheese croissant and almond croissant have earned cult status, while salads and high-protein options keep things balanced. Add excellent coffee from local legends Good Fortune and you’ve got a very well-rounded cafe experience indeed.
It was only a matter of time before the Hutt was treated to its own Belén outpost. From donuts to sandwiches and everything in between, it’s a go-to for any foodie, vegan or otherwise.
