When Bronwyn Zimmerman opened Zimmerman Art Gallery in 2010 her goal was to create greater public access to art in the Manawatū. “Art shouldn’t be hidden away or be behind some foreboding wall” she said. As a result this gallery is approachable, open, free and downright fun to visit.
Zimmerman Art Gallery has always operated with the ethos that public access is paramount and this can be seen from the start. Located on Main Street, Zimmerman’s floor to ceiling windows display the front exhibition space 24/7 and seem to beckon you in from across the way. This display space features a new exhibition every month, and the open format means that everyone can enjoy the art, even without coming inside. But do go inside of course, because behind this section you’ll find even more creative works.
At any one time, Zimmerman Art Gallery will have about 20 different artists’ work on display. Bronwyn knows these artists personally, so can speak to their techniques, styles and stories. She loves what she does, and her welcoming spirit makes Zimmerman Art Gallery an easy place to experience art.
Within the gallery, you’ll find works by Paul and Fran Dibble, two of Palmerston North’s most prominent artists and bronze sculptors, amongst works from artists based around New Zealand. Naga Tsutsumi, another local artist, is also well represented at the gallery, and his large scale charcoal drawings are full of movement and detail to explore. Mediums found here include ceramics, paintings, bronze sculptures and more - every piece, however, is an original.
Come and enjoy all the contemporary art Zimmerman has to offer, in the inviting, engaging space designed for you to indulge at will.
