Since June 2022, the modern and inclusive Bergman Gallery has been enhancing the upper stretches of Auckland’s arty-infused Karangahape Road. A strong supporter of Contemporary Pacific Art, Bergman Gallery established its roots in Rarotonga, Cook Islands, back in 2016 before recently spreading internationally to little ol’ NZ.
Bergman Gallery is a dealer gallery representing and exhibiting artists from the broader Pacific region. They regularly feature exhibitions by Pacific artists as well as pride exhibitions. In the welcoming but intimate space, rotating exhibitions showcase local talent, as well as constantly exploring international artists. Bergmans also participates in art fairs and even offers an invitational artist in residence program in Rarotonga. Other services include private and corporate art consultations, valuations, acquisitions, art hanging and framing advice.
At Bergman Gallery, they’re not afraid to do things differently. Recently, there was a pride exhibition that also discussed prejudice, and in June 2023, the gallery hosted the largest Contemporary New Zealand Asian Art exhibition, featuring nine different New Zealand artists of Asian descent.
The represented artists themselves are often showcased internationally, with opportunities such as inclusion in the European Cultural Centre’s curated project, Personal Structures in Venice, Italy, as experienced by artist Mahiriki Tangaroa in 2022 with her exhibition Kaveinga - Angels of the Ocean, as well as participation in VOLTA New York, and Art Fair Tokyo.
With a real emphasis on inclusion, everyone is always welcome to any of their events, including the exhibition openings and artist talks.
