Onslow on Princes Street gets the balance between polish and warmth exactly right. Set within a landmark central city address, it’s the kind of place that feels quietly special from the moment you walk in, without ever tipping into stiffness.
The menu is shaped by the seasons, with a strong focus on New Zealand produce and the people behind it. Expect thoughtful, refined cooking that lets quality ingredients do the heavy lifting, from beautifully handled seafood to rich, slow-cooked meats. The approach to their dishes is restrained in the best way: precise, ingredient-led and confident enough not to overcomplicate things.
There’s a calm, considered atmosphere to the whole experience, whether you’re there for a long lunch, a special dinner or something worth dressing up for. The dining room is shaped by soft light and a range of curated artwork, including a Mark Adams photographic triptych of Hinemihi at the centre of the room, giving the space an added sense of history and connection.
The service is attentive, with the odd tableside flourish to make the meal memorable without ever feeling over the top. It’s no surprise that this place has become a go-to for birthdays, anniversaries and occasions that call for something a little elevated. Still, for all its polish, it feels approachable – the sort of spot you might first come across on a business lunch, then find yourself coming back with the family or friends.
If you’re after a meal that feels special but not overly formal, this one makes a very strong case for itself.
