Goose Bakery is a family-run artisanal bakery in Matakana known for its high-quality bakes and central, sunny location. Their Polish heritage shines through in their offerings, alongside staple sourdough loaves, croissants, and danishes, you'll find Polish custard buns, traditional cakes, and even premium Polka Deli sausages. It’s a place where craftsmanship meets culture, delivering flavours that are both familiar and delightfully unexpected.

Goose began as a leap of faith, with Polish twin siblings Michał and Dorota and Michał’s wife Ola leaving Wellington behind for a fresh start. The business started “with no plan, just a shared goal to make something out there on our own”. With no set plan, just a shared dream, they took over a vacant space in Matakana, learning on the go, training with local bakers, and pouring their energy into transforming it into the bakery they envisioned. While there was plenty to love about Matakana, it was the vacant lot that drew them here, and to this day they hold no regrets.

A spacious cafe perched on the hill of one of Matakana’s busiest intersections, Goose has evolved to become  a space filled with personality, passion, and a deep appreciation for good food. From the sun-drenched courtyard outside, to the s

prawling wooden, cosy interior, Goose holds its appeal through all kinds of weather.
Their signature items include sourdough, rosemary garlic ciabatta, cretzels, and the much-loved Saturday Pączki (Polish doughnuts). Goose also serves expertly brewed Eighthirty Coffee, housemade chai, and Unmatchable Matcha, founded by co-owner Michał. Every item is made with care, using time-honoured techniques and the best ingredients.

From the moment they opened their bakehouse window for weekend pop-ups, the people of Matakana embraced them: sharing loaves with friends, lending a hand when needed and making them feel right at home. These days, the team may no longer require the locals’ helping hands, but it’s this incredible sense of connection that fuels the team’s passion, proving that Goose Bakery isn’t just about baking; it’s about bringing people together, one loaf at a time.
