Another culinary gem hidden in the labyrinthine City Works Depot is Best Ugly Bagels, who aim to hit the morning and brunch demographic with a shot of pure doughy goodness.
These guys take pride in the fact that they’re not making a visually appealing product yet in its imperfections every bagel here proves its worth in flavour. The ingredients are kiwi, but the technique is imported from Montreal.
The sleeker, larger, slightly misshapen wheels are pulled fresh from the wood fired ovens, which fills the room with an intoxicating aroma. The salmon, onion and cream cheese is as gourmet as it gets and is easily one of the best on the menu.
For those living on the Ponsonby side of Queen Street, Best Ugly is in the ideal proximity, and to prevent people dying from bagel overload, their store hours are only 7am-3pm.
