With the motto ‘handcrafted happiness’ Black Peak makes sure its icy treats are nothing short of exceptional, and inside the pastel pink and green coloured shop you’ll find colours and flavours gelato dreams are made of.
Bowls of Tim-Tams, Crunchie bits and Central Otago fruit line the benches behind the counter, and with the big gelato machines turning those exact ingredients into the meal in a cone you’re about to receive, there’s no doubting the authenticity of this place. Keeping some flavours fairly simple means customers have the chance to mix and match double scoops without the flavour becoming too overwhelming (salted caramel and chocolate being a popular combo). Expertly paddled into kiddy, waffle or regular cones by the cheery staff, choosing is often the hardest part, and most likely you’ll have to come back more than once to really feel you’ve had the true Black Peak experience. If it’s a liquid treat you’re after, Black Peak also offers all their special flavours in milkshake, thick shake or fruit shake form.
With a faultless recipe passed down to owner Jon by an Italian friend, you can rest easy knowing this place really does make true on that statement ‘you can turn anything into ice cream’. Pick up your treat to go and sit out front on the patio seats, or even better wander down to the lake and draw envious glances from fellow visitors.
