The entranceway to Poco Tapas & Wine (“Poco” meaning “a little” in Spanish) in Rotorua isn’t immediately evident from the street, but once you spot the subtle stairs to the left of the O’Sullivan Clemens building, head right up to the first-floor dining room. It’s an open, inviting space with plenty of natural light, an attractive counter bar and attention to detail—the vibe is classic, understated elegance with a nod to mid-century design, such as through the monochrome tiles by the bar and kitchen.

The tapas-style menu is designed to share, and dishes change out seasonally—think global flavours with a Kiwi twist. Pick and choose from the menu, or take the thinking out of it entirely by going with the Chef’s Menu and letting the kitchen decide. The charcuterie board by A Lady Butcher is a highlight, as is the blue cheese “fondue” with baguette slices perfect for scooping out the melty, creamy spread.

And, of course, as befitting a wine bar, the wine list is exceptional, drawing from wineries across the country, including some organic wines and harder-to-find vintages from places like Black Estate or Coal Pit Wines. Check out the chalkboard propped up behind the bar or Poco’s Instagram for details on their wine and cocktail specials.
