The Fainting Goat is a fun, funky and family-friendly gastropub located in the heart of Rotorua’s CBD, complete with pinball machine.
You certainly won’t leave hungry: portions, though designed for sharing, are generous, and everything is made in-house with local produce. The hearty rectangular pizzas are ordered by the foot—either one or two—and can be made gluten-free or with vegan cheese upon request. A highlight is the brisket for the Whiskey & Wild, which is slow-cooked in-house.
If you’ve come with a crowd, try one of the three massive shared boards served on a curved tray made of barrel staves and could easily feed four people. The Goats’ Tribe is a carnivore’s dream, with chicken wings, sticky pork ribs, slow braised brisket, spicy lamb kofta and all the fixings. On the Kaimoana board, the calamari is addictively moreish and the kokoda—a Fijian ceviche marinated in citrus and coconut milk—is a standout. For something with a more elevated vibe, there’s the Cheeseboard, which has four types of cheese and plenty of accompaniments, dips, and crackers.
All of this is anchored with a solid menu of craft beer on tap, plus seasonal cocktails and a deep range of New Zealand gins and spirits. They’re also trialling weekly community events like a Sunday DJ Session, so check their Instagram for details of what’s coming up.
