In the heart of Rotorua’s CBD, Mekong Buffalo is a restaurant celebrating bold Southeast Asian flavours and culture. What began under a different name found new life in 2021 when Om and his passionate team took over with a simple yet powerful vision: to create a space where locals and visitors could experience authenticity, creativity and connection through food. The name ‘Mekong Buffalo’ reflects two things: first, the mighty Mekong River that links multiple countries and cuisines, and second, the hard-working and resilient water buffalo, a cornerstone of rural life across Asia.

Owner Om hails from Nepal, with a background in Indian cuisine and multiple successful central North Island restaurants in times gone by, he saw the untapped potential that Rotorua’s Mekong Buffalo site had to offer. Giving the interior a fresh look, complete with forest green tones and wood finishings, Om and his team have created a spacious restaurant that is simultaneously sophisticated and welcoming.

Inspiration for dishes is taken from those countries along the Mekong River, including Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, then blended with a comforting Kiwi touch.

Everything is made from scratch and created using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. The menu offers a mix of street-style dishes and exquisitely presented refined plates, such as dumplings, bao buns, curries and Mekong Buffalo’s famous Tamarind soft shell crab. The cocktail menu is expansive, incorporates Asian botanicals, and sits alongside a comprehensive range of wines & spirits from both New Zealand and around the world.

At Mekong Buffalo, dining is treated as an exploration and a way of travelling with the taste buds. Seasonal specials showcase flavours from Japan, Korea, Nepal and Tibet, ensuring the menu remains interesting and innovative. Whether you’re drawn to the restaurant by the exquisite plating, the shared style of eating or the relaxed atmosphere, you’ll leave satisfied by the authentic yet comforting flavours and warm hospitality.
